You are launching a store brand or a house line and the sourcing decision behind the seasoning is going to shape your margin, your shelf date, and the ingredient statement your customers actually read. Pick the wrong partner and you inherit their MOQs, their lead times, and their formulation limits. Here is what to check before you sign a supply agreement.
What Is Private Label Seasoning?
Private label seasoning is a product manufactured by one company and sold under another company's brand. You control the label, the positioning, and the retail price. The manufacturer builds the formula, runs production, and ships to your specs. But their name doesn't appear on the front of the pack. That is the shape of a private label seasoning program end to end.
- Retail private label: store brands sold on grocery shelves. Kirkland Signature, Great Value, Simple Truth, HEB Own Brand.
- Foodservice house brands: seasonings used inside restaurants and c-store kitchens under an operator's internal brand or an unbranded spec.
- Co-packer branded ingredients: seasoning systems supplied to a contract manufacturer producing under multiple end-brand labels.
Key Questions to Ask a Private Label Partner
Minimum Order Quantities
MOQs in seasoning manufacturing range from 500 pounds at the low end to 10,000+ pounds at large industrial plants. That range hides real cash-flow consequences. A 10,000-lb MOQ for a SKU that sells 400 lbs a month means holding two years of inventory before your next run. And if the product misses at retail, you're writing off the balance.
FISA Lab operates on a tiered MOQ: 309 lbs per SKU on meat systems, 551 lbs (250 kg) on snack systems, with full pallets available for larger runs. That lets private label buyers launch, test, and iterate without pre-committing to volumes their retail data doesn't yet support.
Lead Times
Development samples across the industry typically run 2 to 4 weeks. Production, once approved, runs 4 to 8 weeks. Both windows widen quickly when a manufacturer is running behind or subcontracting portions of the process.
FISA Lab targets 15 business days for samples and 5 weeks for production. The shorter timeline is a function of running our own pilot and production lines rather than routing through a third party.
Certifications
Certifications aren't optional if you're selling into retail. Confirm what your partner holds before formulation, not after.
- FDA registration: required for any product sold in the US.
- FSSC 22000, SQF, BRCGS: GFSI-recognized food safety schemes. Retailer requirements vary. Walmart and Costco lean SQF; some banners accept any GFSI standard.
- Kosher, Halal, Organic, Non-GMO: product-specific claims that require certified inputs, segregated production, and audited processes.
Clean Label Capability
Ask three specific questions: Can they reformulate existing products to remove synthetic colors, MSG, or phosphates? Is clean label their default posture or an upcharge? Do they have documented experience with retailer-specific banned-ingredient lists (Whole Foods, Kroger Simple Truth, Costco Kirkland)?
See clean label requirements by retailer for a breakdown of what each banner enforces. If exclusivity is what you are really buying, read the flavor on your shelf isn't yours, and for the production side, how co-packers hold flavor consistent across brands.
Formulation Ownership
The most common private label dispute isn't price or lead time. It's who owns the recipe. Put it in writing before development starts.
- Ownership: if you're paying for development, the formula should be yours. Many manufacturers default to keeping the IP.
- Exclusivity: does the manufacturer agree not to sell the same formula to a competing brand? For how long? In what channels?
- Portability: if you switch manufacturers, do you get a full spec sheet. Ingredient statement, sourcing, process. Or just a general profile?
Red Flags to Watch For
- No facility tour or audit option. A serious partner will host a walk-through or a virtual audit.
- Vague answers on certifications, 'we can get certified' is different from 'we are certified.'
- MOQs that don't match your volume. Either too high to launch or too low to be a serious production partner.
- Long lead times with no explanation. Schedule tightness is fine, but the reason should be transparent.
Why FISA Lab for Private Label
- Clean label by default: no artificial colors, no MSG, no phosphates unless a spec explicitly requires them. Not an upcharge.
- MOQ from 309 lb per SKU: launch and iterate without overcommitting inventory.
- Proven manufacturing base: manufactured in a plant with four decades of production history at industrial scale.
- USMCA 0% tariff: cross-border shipping between Mexico and the US under USMCA. No tariff exposure on qualifying seasoning systems.
